Upcoming Trainings

The School Law Enforcement (SLEP) provides regional training for bully prevention, emergency readiness and safe school planning.

Bully Prevention: Communities throughout the nation are dealing with bullying behaviors. These behaviors have a negative impact on the school community. The SLEP has developed training for schools to be able to indentify early warning signs of bullying, clearly define bullying, establish a bully policy and implement bully prevention and intervention efforts. This training is appropriate for elementary through secondary schools.

Emergency Readiness/Crisis Response Planning: This training addresses how to prepare and respond to school-related crises and emergencies. Trainers summarize specific related topics and laws relating to school emergency readiness. The training allows school site teams to identify critical risks and develop a four-part plan that includes Prevention/Mitigation, Preparedness, Response and Recovery. Best practices in response protocols including lockdown, evacuation, containment and long-term shelter in place are provided. This training will assist schools in meeting compliance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS). The training concludes with resources, summary and next steps.

School Safety Planning: This training addresses the legal mandate for comprehensive school safety planning and includes a discussion of the impact of school safety on academic achievement. Trainers provide an overview of the comprehensive safe schools planning process and the seven action steps for planning. Participants begin the process of developing a comprehensive plan using sections from the safe schools guide and accompanying workbook. Trainings may be modified to meet the unique needs of schools in each region. The trainers provide guidance on using the planning results to identify and implement science-based programs and other safe school programs and activities. The training concludes with resources, a summary, and next steps.

CA EC32280: It is the intent of the Legislature that all California public schools, in kindergarten, and grades 1 to 12, inclusive, operated by school districts, in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies, community leaders, parents, pupils, teachers, administrators, and other persons who may be interested in the prevention of campus crime and violence, develop a comprehensive school safety plan that addresses the safety concerns identified through a systematic planning process. For the purposes of this section, law enforcement agencies include local police departments, county sheriffs’ offices, school district police or security departments, probation departments, and district attorneys’ offices. For purposes of this section, a “safety plan” means a plan to develop strategies aimed at the prevention of, and education about, potential incidents involving crime and violence on the school campus.
